چکیده

Currently, use of geo-location databases is the preferred method for detecting TV white spaces by white space devices in the US. The approach protects TV transmitters and receivers from interference sufficiently by keeping a record of the TV transmitters’ information, and relying on propagation models to determine the protection area of the TV transmitters. Thus accurate radio propagation by the propagation models is the key to determining the protection area of the TV transmitters. How accurate the propagation models determine the protection area is largely dependent on the terrain characteristics and environmental factors that vary widely from one area to another. These propagation models have been tested in different regions of the world but scarcely in the developing world where white space is assumed to provide broadband connectivity. As such, it is unclear at the moment how accurate the geo-location databases will detect TV white spaces in the developing world. Therefore, this paper argues that unless thorough tests have been conducted with the propagation models in the developing world, the use of geo-location databases in predicting TV white spaces in those regions may not produce optimal results. Towards Dynamic Real-Time Geo-location Databases for TV White Spaces

Recent FCC regulations on TV white spaces allow geo-location databases to be the sole source of spectrum information for White Space Devices (WSDs). Geo-location databases protect TV band incumbents by keeping track of TV transmitters and their protected service areas based on their location, transmission parameters and sophisticated propagation models. In this article, we argue that keeping tr...

The White Space Opportunity in Southern Africa: Measurements with Meraka Cognitive Radio Platform

The global migration of television (TV) from analogue to digital broadcasting will result in more spectrum bands (known as TV white space), previously used in analogue broadcasting, becoming available and unoccupied. A question is on how much white space is available and how can it be used opportunistically and dynamically without causing harmful interference to licensed users? In this paper, w...

UHF white space in Europe – a quantitative study into the potential of the 470–790 MHz band

In this paper we study the availability of TV white spaces in Europe. We focus specifically on the 470–790 MHz UHF band that is still predominantly used for TV broadcasting also after the digital dividend (frequency reallocation as part of transition to digital TV), which has taken place or is ongoing in several European countries. We find that in the countries used in our studies, approximatel...

Location estimation-based radio environment map construction in fading channels

Latest regulations on TV white space communications and trend toward spectrum access through geolocation databases relax the regulatory constraints on cognitive radios. Radio environment map (REM) is a kind of improved geolocation database and an emerging topic with the latest regulations on TV white space communications. It constructs a comprehensive temperature map of the cognitive radio netw...

Using Classification to Protect the Integrity of Spectrum Measurements in White Space Networks

The emerging paradigm for using the wireless spectrum more efficiently is based on enabling secondary users to exploit white-space frequencies that are not occupied by primary users. A key enabling technology for forming networks over white spaces is distributed spectrum measurements to identify and assess the quality of unused channels. This spectrum availability data is often aggregated at a ...
